The Bower family owned an old cabin close to Ocidental in California. In 1978 I was working with my friends Paul Timberman and Ralph Bruinslott at Sunhouse Design - a small firm in Occidental specialising in passive solar houses. The Bowers had a very small budget and wanted to have something they could afford that would also have low running costs. They also wanted their house to be in character with the vernacular buildings around Sonoma County  - wineries, small farms with Gravenstein apple orchards etc. The resut involved an asddition of a passive (direct gain) solar greenhouse that doubled as a conservatory/Summer dining space wirth a fan-assisted space herating system into the bedroom and living areas. The cost was about $70,000, and gave them a great deal of extra space.
