The Bicultutalism PDF comprises an article published in the Journal of Architectural Education (USA) which outlines the process and theoretical background behind the Whakatane Project. It looks at the relationship between knowledge and power and domination by consent - that is, hegemony. It then assesses the implication of this nexus for design theorising, and looks at the issue of epistemological privilege for dominant culture designers who work in a cross-cultural setting. All of this theoretical foundation is then used to explicate the Whakatane Study. What is interesting about this publication (which won the 1992 Journal of Architectural Education Award for Outstanding Article of the Year) is that it so clearly links theory and practice in their reciprocal relationship. The article was also later published in the 1991 book, Voices in Architectural Education, (above) edited by Tom Dutton and published by Bergin and Garvey.
