This is an abbreviated PDF varsion of a lecture given to the Western Campus at Miami University at Oxford, Ohio on the 13th April, 2010. The Western Campus was originally a Womens' College that played a significant role in training Civil Rights workers to go tyo Mississipi and Alabama in 1963. Three of the workers trained at the Western Campus were murdered by law enforcement officials. The Western Campus has a history of social activism, independent and multidisciplinary studies and of student-centred scholarship. It was an honour to be asked to speak there. The Western Campus has recently been absorbed into the Miami University system and has sadly lost some of its proud independence.
