This article, first published in Design Studies Magazine (UK) in 1990 develops a critical analysis of the Hidden Curriculum in the design studio in Architecture. It outlines:

  • the cultural politics of the design studio

  • the roles played by competition and hierarchy

  • the legitimation of architectural knowledge

  • the dialectical relationship between process and product

  • the role of "paper architecture" in mitigating against conscientisation

  • the importance of Community Design
