Teachers, Parents, Children and Architecture Students redevelop the Martin Luther King Preschool, Berkeley 1971
This PDF is a transcript of a paper presented to the Emergent Paradigms in Design Education Conference at the University of New South Wales, Australia, in 1997. It challenges prevailing ideology of multiculturalism in Education, showing how it works to further alienate and oppress indigenous peoples and communities under the guise of social, cultural and economic liberation. It proposes instead, a reasoned argument for a separate and parallel education system for indigenous peoples, grounded in their own ways of knowing and using pedagogies that are integral to their culture. Although written almost 20 years ago, before 9/11, the War on Terrorism and Global Warming, I believe that the message is more important than ever.
