There is no shortage of food in the world. All the research suggests that if food were to be distributed equally there would be plenty to feed everybody. The global food industry is not organized to feed the hungry; it is organized to generate profits for corporate agribusiness. The production and distribution of food is controlled by a very few large multinational companies. Among them is Monsanto who have set about patenting the genetic codes of all of the world's seed stocks. This is designed specifically to take total control okf the world food supply in order to establish an unassailable monopoly.
In the first PDF, Capitalism, Agribusiness and the Food Sovereignty Alternative Ian Angus outlines a critical understanding of the social construction of hunger. Ian Angus is editor of Climate and Capitalism. Part One of this article was published in Socialist Voice and in The Bullet (Socialist Project), on April 28, 2008.
In the seconnd PDF, Corporations Grab Climate Genes, Hope Shand describes how, after falsely promising that genetically engineered organisms and seeds would clean pollution and  avert world hunger, the large agribusiness corporations Monsanto, BASF, DuPont, Syngenta, Bayer, and Dow are now promising that we need genetically modified plants that can cope with climate change. They are stockpiling and ppatenting seeds that have hist stress resistance to climatic fluctuations.
